Things are looking up

Dear Friends,

Last February, I visited our dear Ecole Fula Flute / Centre Tyabala in Conakry, Guinea and I am happy to report that things are going well.

I was expecting difficult conditions, but thanks to your donations and the hard work of our associates on the ground, we have moved into a decent four-bedroom house with a large walled-in courtyard. I found it cleaned up, painted, completely functional with electricity, bathroom (though no running water), a performance stage built and, by now, a corrugated metal roof installed over most of the courtyard. I was impressed and encouraged to see this magnificent work.

The house sits at the end of a long driveway behind a gate, secluded from the main road, but not isolated, a few minutes’ walk from where we were before making it easy for the kids to get to school and back. 

I teached every day, refreshing their knowledge of music theory and made progress with the chromatic flute. We recorded the student's repertoire and performed a concert for the community. 

Before, when we were in the large public space at Maison des Jeunes, we were subjected to many disruptions and distractions, now that we control our environment we can really concentrate.

We built many standardized flutes to improve the tuning and to spare the traditional flutes for performances, we also tuned the ngonis (traditional guitar) with them with the happy result that you can hear in the video clip above.

Our faculty includes Master flutist Mamady Mansare, who enthusiastically supports this initiative and is very happy to participate in the emergence of a new generation of flutists.

Master Bouba Mbeng is a dedicated teacher of voice, ngoni and percussion. We all benefit from his calm and assiduous presence. You can see him at work in the video above.

Co-founder Véronique Lamah, directs and performs plays with the students that are often presented around town. She is also our mom and supervises daily operations.

Our Director and co-founder, Momo Sylla knows everybody and everybody knows him, he is a man of the theater with a deep commitment to his mission and is always striving to render meaningful the Centre’s place in the community.

Other faculty are providing classes in French, arithmetic, social sciences, dance and, possibly soon, music theory. We have been working on tightening operations and adding more classes in elementary subjects.

Therefore, we are in a good place, definitely an incredible improvement from last years' conditions, and are optimistically pressing forward. Our main challenges are to continue finding support and transition from an informal program into a viable institution. Our evolution has been organic, rooted in the realities of Guinea and as we grow, are uncovering our identity.

This project has inspired many people to contribute and that is an integral part of our success. We are the seed, Guinea is the soil, and You are the water.

Les choses promettent

Chers ami(e)s,
en février dernier, j’ai visité notre Ecole Fula Flute / Centre Tyabala à Conakry en Guinée et je suis heureux de vous rapporter que les choses vont bien.

Grâce à vos contributions, nous avons aménagé dans une maison de quatre chambres avec une large cour murée. Je m’attendais à des conditions difficiles mais j’ai trouvé l’endroit nettoyé, retapé, peinturé, propre, fonctionnel, avec électricité, salle de douche (mais sans eau courante), une scène en béton bâtie dans la cour et à l’heure où je vous écris une toiture en tôle érigée afin de protéger l’aire de travail contre les éléments. Je fus impressionné et très encouragé de voir ce magnifique travail.

La maison est située au fond d’une allée, à l'écart de la route principale mais pas isolée et à quelques minutes de marche de l’endroit où nous étions précédemment, ce n’est donc pas un problème pour les enfants de faire l’aller-retour.

J’ai enseigné tous les jours, rafraîchissant leurs connaissances en théorie musicale et j'ai poussé plus avant dans la flûte chromatique. Nous avons enregistré leur répertoire et présenté un concert à la communauté qui en fut enchantée.

Lorsque nous étions dans le grand espace public du hangar de la Maison des Jeunes, nous étions soumis à beaucoup d’interruptions et distractions, maintenant que nous contrôlons notre environnement nous pouvons vraiment nous concentrer. 

Nous avons fabriqué plus d'une douzaine de flûtes avons accordé les « ngonis » (guitare traditionnelle) avec elles, vous pouvez en constater l'heureux résultat dans le vidéo ci-dessus.

Notre équipe inclus le grand maître flûtiste de Guinée par excellence, Mamady Mansaré, qui soutient de tout coeur notre initiative, il est très heureux de participer à l'emergence de cette nouvelle génération de flûtistes guinéens.

Bouba Mbeng est un dévoué professeur de chant, ngoni et percussions, nous bénéficions tous de sa calme et assidue présence. Vous pouvez le voir à l'oeuvre dans le vidéo ci-dessus.

Co-fondatrice Véronique Lamah dirige et joue des pièces de théâtre avec les élèves, en plus, elle est notre maman et supervise le bon fonctionnement de la maison.

Directeur et co-fondateur Momo Sylla connaît tout le monde et tout le monde le connaît, un homme de théâtre à l'engagement profond qui s’efforce toujours de renforcer la place du Centre dans la communauté. 

D’autres professeurs enseignent le français, arithmétique, sciences sociales et humaines, danse et nous l'espérons bientôt, la théorie musicale et nous avons augmenté la fréquence des cours d’alphabétisation.

En résumé notre projet est sur la bonne voie. Nos principaux défis consistent à continuer d'assurer le financement et à gérer la transition d'un programme alternatif informel à une institution viable. Notre croissance a été organique, façonnée par les réalités sur le terrain et peu-à-peu, à mesure de notre évolution, notre identité se dévoile.

Ce projet a inspiré beaucoup de gens à y contribuer et cela est partie intégrante de notre réussite. Nous sommes la graine, la Guinée est le sol et Vous êtes l'eau. Nous vous remercions de votre soutient et nous vous en sommes très reconnaissants.

Résultats de la campagne de financement 2017

Chers Supporters et Amis,

Notre campagne de financement annuelle se termine ce weekend et nous sommes heureux d’annoncer une augmentation de 73% sur les résultats de l’an dernier. Nous avons réalisé $8,202.00, dont $5,185 en chèques et $3,017 en ligne. De plus, certaines personnes se sont engagées à un support mensuel de $200, pour une somme annuelle de $2400, ce qui amène le résultat pour 2017 à $10,602, une amélioration de près de $4,500 sur celui de l’an dernier. Cela ne suffira pas à tous nos besoins mais nous permettra de rencontrer les plus fondamentaux.

Ce qui nous a vraiment aidé fut qu’une grande flûtiste, Mme Jayn Rosenfeld-Siegel et son mari Jerrold Siegel, nous ont cordialement ouvert leur domicile pour une soirée/salon nous offrant ainsi la chance de présenter notre projet à leurs proches qui en furent très touchés. Ce soir-là nous avons directement et indirectement inspiré des contributions de plus de $5,500.

Nos hôtes furent charmants et ravis de la soirée, ainsi que nous même. Cela s’est si bien passé que nous vous relançons l’idée d’organiser une soirée culturelle et philanthropique chez vous. Vous inviteriez vos amis et relations et nous y ferions une démonstration de flûte live et présenterions sur écran un historique du projet en photos, vidéos et musique.

Toute l'année, nous continuerons à chercher des opportunités de diffuser cette présentation. Si cela vous intéresse, veuillez nous contacter à fulaflute@gmail.com.

2016 Campaign Results

2017 fundraising campaign results

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Our annual fundraising campaign ends this weekend and we are pleased to announce a 73% improvement over last year's results. We received $8,202.00 in donations, including $5,185 in checks and $3,017 online. In addition, some have committed to a monthly support of $200, for an annual total of $2400, bringing the result for 2017 to $ 10,602, an improvement of nearly $4,500 over last year's. This is not quite enough to meet all our needs but it secures the fundamentals.

One thing that helped tremendously was that a great flautist, Mrs. Jayn Rosenfeld-Siegel and her husband Jerrold Siegel, cordially opened their home to us for a salon event, giving us the opportunity to present our project to their friends and they were moved so that evening we directly and indirectly inspired contributions of more than $5,500.

Our hosts were charming and delighted with the evening and we were too. It went so well that we are offering to present this cultural / philanthropic event in your home. You would invite your friends and relations and we would make a live flute demonstration and present the project’s story on-screen in photos, videos and music.

Throughout the year, we will continue to seek opportunities to make this presentation. If you are interested in hosting it, please contact us at fulaflute@gmail.com.

MESSAGE DE L'ECOLE FULA FLUTE

Bonjour cher(e) ami(e),

Grâce à votre générosité, notre École Fula Flute en Guinée, en collaboration avec le Centre Tyabala, se porte bien et y enrichi la vie de beaucoup d’enfants.

Nous contribuons à leur épanouïssement personel et musical et par là même à l’épanouïssement de la culture Guinéene en général car en élevant une génération de flûtistes dédiés, nous inssuflons une nouvelle vie à cet instrument iconique.

En plus d’une formation scolaire, nos élèves recoivent l’instruction des excellents professeurs qui se sont joint à nous: en l’occurrence, Maître Mamady Mansaré, le Mansa de la flûte guinéenne, qui enseigne le répertoire et la pratique de la flûte traditionelle Mandingue; Maître Bouba Mbeng, lui, offre la discipline dans l’art exhubérant de la percussion et dans celui, plus délicat, du ngoni, la guitare traditionelle, ainsi que celui de la chanson. Périodiquement, j’y séjourne moi-même et leur enseigne la flûte chromatique, la théorie ainsi que de la pratique musicale. Nos étudiants absorbent ces enseignements avec enthousiasme, surmontent quotidiennement les défis qui leur sont lancés car ils et elles ont un grand cœur pour la musique.

Malheureusement, il y a une ombre au tableau: Récemment, nous avons perdu l’usage du hangar dans lequel nous travaillions depuis plusieurs années, le gouvernement ayant réassigné la vocation de ce magnifique espace. Nous sommes maintenant dans la rue! Mais les classes continuent tous les jours et professeurs et élèves tiennent bravement le coup en attendant une solution.

Nous faisons donc appel à vous chers et fidèles supporters, si notre travail vous inspire, SVP, aidez-nous!!! Nos besoins sont grands cette année car nous devons trouver un lieu adéquat pour abriter nos activités.

Notre projet à pour but ultime l’élaboration et la preuve d’une méthode d’éducation musicale qui pourra être utilisée généralement. Nous avancons doucement, petit-à-petit, laissant notre création prendre forme et la laissant nous montrer le chemin.

Greetings Dear Friend,

Thanks to your generosity, our Ecole Fula Flute, in collaboration with the Centre Tyabala de Guinee, is doing well and enriching the lives of many kids in Conakry. 

We further our students' individual and musical development and thus contribute to advance Guinean culture by bringing up a new generation of dedicated flute players thereby infusing a new life in this iconic instrument.

In addition to a basic education, our students receive instruction by the excellent teachers who have joined our school, namely, Master Mamady Mansaré, the Mansa of Guinean flute, who teaches traditional repertoire and practice; secondly, Master Bouba Mbeng offers discipline in the exuberant art of percussion, and in the more delicate one of the ngoni (the traditional guitar) as well as instruction in singing. In my regular visits, I teach traditional and modern tambin-flute, music theory and practice. Our students absorb these teachings with enthusiasm, rising to the challenges on a daily basis as they have a big heart for music.

Unfortunately, there are bad news: We recently lost the use of the industrial hangar in which we were working for many years, the government having re-purposed this beautiful space, so we are in the street. However, the school’s daily activities continue and students and teachers bravely carry on until a solution is found.

We therefore appeal to you, dear and loyal supporters, if our work inspires you, please, help us!!! Our needs are great this year, as we have to find a suitable facility to host our activities.

Our long-term goals are the development and validation of a music education method that can be then extended to other institutions. We are advancing slowly, step-by-step, watching our creation come to life and let her show us the way.

UN NOUVEAU PROFESSEUR S'AJOUTE À L'ÉCOLE FULA FLUTE

Maître Bouba Mbeng

De retour de ma visite bi-annuelle avec nos élèves à Conakry je suis très heureux de vous rapporter que l’École Fula Flute se porte bien.

Depuis décembre dernier, lorsque nous vous avions relaté que nos étudiants avaient joué à la cérémonie d’inauguration du Président un nouveau professeur s’est joint à nous, il est venu bien recommendé par l’une d’entre vous, généreuses donatrices et donateurs, on l’a mis à l’essai il est formidable! Maître Bouba Mbeng est un grand percussioniste, joueur de kamala ngoni et excellent chanteur, il est d’une grande gentillesse et avec patience et douceur il arrive à de beaux résultats comme en témoignent les clips ci-joints (“Fouta” et “Suite Percussion”). De plus, il est arrivé au bon moment pour combler un vide et a contribué à augmenter la versatilité de nos élèves en les introduisant au kamala ngoni.

Nos étudiants ont un amour profond de la musique, plus on leur en donne plus ils en veulent et cette fois-ci j’étais content d'entamer avec nos plus avancés les fondements de la tambin chromatique. J'ai aussi eu le plaisir de leur faire jouer le morceau de jazz classique “Saint James Infirmary,” en plus de “Frère Jacques”–en canon comme il se doit–et le classique mandingue “Soundiata” en trois tonalités: la bémol, si bémol et do.

De plus, je me suis concentré sur les plus petits pour les amener à mieux fermer les trous de la flûte et produire ainsi un meilleur son. Les grands n’ont pas de patience avec eux mais j’ai insisté qu’ils observent la classe et quelques uns ont suivi mon conseil et nous avons progressé ainsi.

Maître Mamady Mansaré est un des plus grands artistes de la Guinée, il vient régulièrement offrir son instruction en flûte Malinké. Je le respecte doublement, triplement et quadruplement même car il vient de loin pour enseigner. Sa contribution est inestimable, tout simplement le coeur de la flûte Guinéene. Nous le remercions profondément.

Parmi nos élèves un fabricant entousiaste de flûte s’est manifesté en la personne d’Abdoulaye, notre batteur-en-chef, à qui j’ai pu démontrer des principes de fabrication qu’il s’est empressé de mettre en pratique et a ainsi produit quelques flûtes décentes.

Vers la fin de mon séjour, des étudiants en musique de l’ISAG (Institut Supérieur des Arts de Guinée)–étonnamment, surtout des pianistes–nous ont rendu visite et ont pendant plusieurs jours assistés à nos activité, pris des notes, posé beaucoup de bonnes questions et furent apparemment très intéressés parce qu’ils ont vu et entendu. Il semblerait qu'une nouvelle relation est en cours de développement avec l'Institut.

Le Centre Tyabala de Guinée est administré par des personnes honorables et courageuses. En effet, et cela depuis huit ans, M. Mohamed Momo Sylla et Mme Véronique Patric Lamah sont sur le terrain chaque jour à superviser les classes, les repas, s’occupent d’administration, de recrutement, effectuent des démarches et s’occupent de tous les besoins petits et grands.

L’argent que vous donnez est bien utilisé: il contribue à acheter et réparer les instruments, payer les professeurs, nourrir, habiller et offrir des soins médicaux aux enfants.

Pendant mon séjour une crise a éclaté, il semblerait que des intérêts privés avaient obtenu le contrôle du fameux hangar dans lequel nous et d’autres travaillons et que nous étions sur le point d'être évincés. Beaucoup de gens se sont activées contre cette décision jusqu’au soir où une semaine plus tard on m’a rapporté que le bureau de nul autre que le Président de la République avait émis un communiqué à la télévision disant que “la Maison des Jeunes de Taouyah restera à jamais la Maison des Jeunes de Taouyah et que les rumeurs qui disent qu’elle avait été vendue étaient fausses.”

Il y a eu des célébrations qui ont malheureusement coincidé avec le temps que nous avions prévu pour enregistrer le répertoire de Bouba. Des gars ont installé de grands haut-parleurs sur la voie publique et en pleine journée le bruit a commencé: musique à tue-tête interrompue par de longs discours. Nous avons quand même pu négocier un sursis d’une heure et quelque dont nous avons profité pour faire notre travail.

Il y eu beaucoup de moments magiques et ce fut un voyage inoubliable… qui en appele un autre… à l’automne prochain, inch’ Allah.

NEW TEACHER AT ECOLE FULA FLUTE/CENTRE TYABALA

Master Bouba Mbeng

Back from my May visit with our students in Conakry, I am happy to report that l’Ecole Fula Flute is in good shape.

Since last December when our students played for the inauguration of the President a new teacher has joined our school. He came well recommended by one of you dear generous donators, we gave him a try and he is wonderful! Master Bouba Mbeng is a great percussionist, kamala ngoni player and excellent singer. He is very kind and with patience and persistence he achieves excellent results with the kids, as demonstrates the featured clips (“Fouta” and “Suite Percussion”). Furthermore he serendipitously filled a void and helped augment the versatility of our student by introducing them to a new instrument, the kamala ngoni.

Our students have a great love for music and the more we give them, the more they want so I was glad to begin instructing the most advanced in the basics of the chromatic tambin. I also had the pleasure of teaching them the jazz classic “Saint-James Infirmary,” and “Soundiata,” the classic Mande epic in three keys: C, B-flat and A-flat.

I made a concentrated effort with the younger kids to help them properly close the holes on the flute and produce a better sound. I asked the older ones–who don’t have patience with the little ones–to observe my class and several of them did and we therefore made a little more progress.

Master Mamady Mansare, one of the greatest musicians of Guinea, continues to give instruction in Malinke flute. I doubly, triply and quadruply love and respect him as he travels from far in the suburbs to come and teach. His contribution is incalculable: simply the heart of Guinean flute playing, we are very thankful to him.

Among our students, an enthusiastic flute-maker manifested himself in the person of Abdoulaye, our lead percussionist to whom I demonstrated flute making principles which he diligently put to use and quickly produced several decent instruments.

During my last days, we received the visit of students from ISAG (Superior Arts Institute of Guinea)–surprisingly mostly pianists–who observed our activities and classes. They took notes and asked many great questions and were evidently very interested by what they saw and heard and it appears that we are developing a relationship with the Institute.

The Centre Tyabala is managed by honorable and courageous people, namely, Mr. Mohamed Momo Sylla and Ms. Veronique Patrick Lamah who have for the last eight years been there every day supervising classes, meals, administering, recruiting, beat the pavement and take care of the needs big and small.

The money you contribute is well spent: we help procure and repair instruments, pay teachers, and provide food, clothes, and medical care to the kids.

During my stay a crisis erupted, it seems some private interests had managed to wrestle control of the storied hangar in which we, and others, work and we were about to be evicted. Many people mobilised and a week later I was told that none other than the office of the President of the Republic released a statement on television stating that (paraphrasing): “ the 'Maison des Jeunes’ (Youth House) of Taouyah will always be the Maison des Jeunes of Taouyah and that any rumors to the effect that it had been sold were erroneous.”

There were celebrations which coincided with the time we had scheduled to record the repertoire of Master Bouba. Some men set up large loudspeakers on the street and a lot of noise insued: deafening music punctuated by long speeches. However, we were able to negotiate a repreive of which we took advantage to do our work.

There were many magical moments and the whole amounted to, again, an unforgettable trip… which calls for another… next Fall, inch’ Allah.

May 2016 Before Travel

Guinea in May

It was going to be June but then Ramadan starts in early June this year and there is definitely no music making during the holy month so my trip had to take place in May or wait another 4 months after the end of the (very) wet season to see my students in Conakry.

L'ecole fula flute, the music education program with the children of the Centre Tyabala de Guinée continues at it's own pace, discovering itself along the way. From the beginning it appeared that a music education process to be truly successful in Guinea had to grow from the root rather than be applied from above. Although, a well financed effort using overwhelming means to establish a bonafide music conservatory would be a worthwhile pursuit, the level of funding required would be politically difficult to achieve given the actual immediate needs of the population. 

The no-nonsense approach that was championed with our Kickstarter project of 2014 (Music Literacy for Guinea) is a credible alternative to offer Guineans theoretical and practical musical knowledge with minimum of resources: a space, a teacher, a blackboard, some desks, paper and pencils, chairs, and homemade flutes that have the ability to play in all twelve keys and allow a cultural connection with the population.

Our intervention in 2014, began the process to give musical literacy and achieve such a goal would require a sustained effort over many years, it however had a positive impact on the musical abilities of our students: they were deeply stimulated and their minds were expanded. Subsequently, their instruction was, by the grace of providence, provided by a living legend of the Malinke flute, Master Mamady Mansare, who offered them a comprehensive foundation in the language of the traditional instrument. He succeeded to the point where our students were invited to perform for the inauguration of the second mandate of President Alpha Condé, a little miracle that we joyfully witnessed first hand when it serendipitously materialized as my wife and I visited last December. 

Then, by another intervention of good fortune, events conspire to bring the wonderful musician Bouba N'beng to teach percussion and ngoni, which they are absorbing with equal intensity.

The situation now is that the Centre is receiving a modicum of material support – thanks to the funds generously donated by you, dear contributors – allowing for teachers of music and alphabetization. An improvement to the previous situation certainly, but still rather meager...

I am going over there for a couple of weeks, leaving today, and we will see where we are at. I will report to you about it when I return, dear Friends. I don't expect anything out of the ordinary but you never know...

Chers Amis, 

Grâce à la Creative Music Foundation et à vous, nos donateurs, à l’occasion de notre récente levée de fonds nous avons récolté plus de $4500, ce qui nous permettra d’offrir un support matériel consistant et constant à nos élèves pendant 2016. Nos étudiants, leurs professeurs et moi vous remercions de votre générosité. 

Mon épouse Magali et moi avons récemment visité la Guinée. Deux semaines très intenses pendant lesquelles j’ai travaillé avec nos élèves et avons vécu des expériences autant extraordinaires qu’inoubliables. 

D’abord, nous fûmes chaleureusement reçus et honorés par une performance qui nous était dédiée. J’ai pu vérifier qu’effectivement, les capacités musicales de nos étudiants s’étaient considérablement améliorées sous le tutelage de Maître Mamady Mansaré. Tant et si bien que quelques jours après notre arrivée nous avons eu la nouvelle que nos élèves étaient invités à se produire au Palais Présidentiel à l’occasion de l’investiture du Président Alpha Condé, devant le Président lui-même et maints autres Présidents, ambassadeurs et dignitaires de la plupart des pays du monde et aux côtés de grands artistes. Pour représenter la Compagnie Théatre Tyabala de Guinée(l’organisation qui héberge notre programme de l’École Fula Flute), six de nos étudiants furent désignés et accompagnés de leur directeur M. Momo Sylla. 

Lundi matin le 14 décembre 2015, les enfants étant en ville aux cérémonies d’investiture et souffrant encore du décalage horaire je dormais un peu tardivement lorsque je fus éveillé par un coup de fil de Véronique, l’assistante de M. Momo, qui m’a annoncé la merveilleuse nouvelle que nos enfants étaient actuellement live à la télévision nationale. Effectivement, à ce moment, rentrant du marché Magali a entendu et reconnu le son de la flûte qu’elle a suivi pour tomber sur un téléviseur dans une boutique qui transmettait la performance de nos enfants en direct. Elle a eu la présence d’esprit de filmer l'évènement sur son téléphone résultant en un fantastique document.

Puis sont venues les félicitations… universelles!!!

Quelques jours plus tard je fus invité en compagnie de M. Momo au Ministère des Arts et Culture à rencontrer M. le Ministre, Son Excellence M. Mohamed Amirou Conté qui a gentillement passé un moment à me questionner sur notre histoire et activités et fut très interessé par l’idée d’une eventuelle école de musique permanente à Conakry. 

Je fus, de plus, invité à rencontrer une légende de la musique, le Directeur National des Arts, M. Jean-Baptiste Williams, “Jeannot.” Nous avons passé un bon moment ensemble et, en ma présence, il a écouté avec intérêt presque tout le disque “Les Enfants de Tyabala” que nous avions produit l’an dernier. Il m’a reconnu comme co-auteur du disque “Fula Flute” (lancé en 2002) et m’a informé qu’il avait lui-même grandement contribué au succès incroyable que ce disque a connu sur les ondes guinéennes. Il m’a posé maintes questions et m’a invité à revenir pour enregistrer une interview pour son émission de radio hebdomadaire. 

Puis, M. Momo, deux de nos étudiants plus âgés, Naby et Fatoumata, et moi-même nous sommes présentés tôt le lendemain à la RTG (Radio Télévision Guinéenne) pour une entrevue en direct à l’émission Kolomatin animée par la formidable Mme Aya Diawara (elle me rappelle Oprah). Les enfants ont joué, et Mme Aya nous a professionellement interviewés. Un peu plus tard, au milieu d’un échange en Soussou avec Fatoumata, Aya fut profondément touchée par les propos de la petite et est tombé en larmes. Elle a dû faire une pause... Nous devions faire quinze minutes mais Aya fut tant intéressée qu’elle nous a gardés près de quarante.

Il est vraiment encourageant de voir que nos idées et efforts portent fruits de façon si spectaculaire. Nos élèves sont fous de musique, plus on leur en donne, plus ils en veulent. Une saine compétition entre eux fait que si l’un apprend une nouvelle pièce, les autres veulent la connaître aussi pour ne pas être en reste. Mamady me dit que s’il leur donne un nouveau morceau un jour, quand il revient le lendemain ils l’ont tous appris.

Mr. Williams m’a confié qu’il est depuis longtemps inquiet pour l’avenir de la musique traditionelle en général et de la flûte guinéenne en particulier tant il semble que la nouvelle génération ne s’y intéresse pas et que donc, notre projet et nos étudiants lui donne un souffle d’espoir, et qu’en ce qui le concerne, la présentation de nos enfants fut la chose la plus intéressante de toute la cérémonie d’investiture.

Avec tous ces évènements vous pouvez imaginer que le projet de L’École Fula Flute et la Compagnie Théâtre Tyabala de Guinée sont exaltés, que tous sont encouragés et prêts à redoubler d’effort. Grâce à vous et pour l’avenir prévisible, les choses vont continuer de s’améliorer. Allahamdoullilah!!! Dieu merci!!!

The Children of Tyabala Play at the Investiture of President Alpha Conde

Dear Friends, 

Thanks to the Creative Music Foundation and our generous donors, we have raised a little over $4500 to provide the children of Tyabala consistent financial support throughout 2016. This will make a significant difference in their lives. The children, their teachers, and I thank for your gracious moral and material support. 

My wife Magali and I have just returned from a very concentrated two-week trip to Guinea where I worked with our students and all had an incredible time. 

We received a warm welcome complete with a private performance. I was able to verify that, indeed, our students’ playing abilities had significantly improved under the tutelage of Master Mamady Mansare. So much so that within a few days of my arrival word came that they were invited to perform at the upcoming investiture of recently re-elected Guinean President, Alpha Condé. Six of our students were selected to represent the Compagnie Centre Tyabala de Guinée (the organization that is hosting our Ecole Fula Flute program) and be accompanied by their director Mr. Momo Sylla.

On Monday morning December 14, the kids being away at the investiture ceremonies, I had the day off from teaching and still somewhat jet-lagged I slept late. I was awakened by a call from Veronique, Mr. Sylla’s assistant, who gave me the wonderful news that our students were live on television. A little while later, Magali arrived from the market were she happened on the proceedings on television and had the presence of mind to record the screen with her iphone, resulting in a fantastic document. 

Then came praise… Universal praise!

A few days later I was invited to the offices of the Ministry of Arts and Culture to meet the Minister, His Excellency, Mr. Mohamed Amirou Conté, who graciously spent a moment learning about our activities and objectives and was very interested in the idea of a permanent music school in Conakry.

I was also invited to meet a living legend of Guinean music, Mr. Jean-Baptiste Williams, the National Director of the Arts and we spent a significant amount of time together. In my presence he listened intently to the almost entire Ecole Fula Flute CD, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He recognized me as co-author of the Fula Flute CD (released in 2002) and told me that he was responsible for having it play extensively on Guinean airwaves though all these years (it has faded now but it was ubiquitous for many years). He asked many questions and invited me to return to record a radio show for his weekly program which I did the following day.

Then, Mr. Momo, myself and two of our students: our eldest boy, Naby, and girl, Fatoumata, were invited to a morning television show on the RTG network (Radio Television Guinéene) called Kolomatin hosted by the wonderful Aya Diawara (who reminds me of Oprah). She professionally interviewed me and then in the middle of an exchange with Fatoumata she broke down in tears touched as she was by the girl’s story and had to take a break off the air to compose herself. We had been scheduled for a 15-minute intervention but Aya was so interested in us that we stayed almost forty.

It is really heartwarming to see our ideas and hard work vindicated in such a spectacular way. Our students are music crazy, the more you give them, the more they want. There is a healthy competition among them: if one learns a new piece, everyone else wants to learn it too. Mamady tells me that if he gives a new song one day, the next time he comes back, they all know it.

Mr. Williams expressed to me what some others have as well, that his generation is worried about the future of traditional music in general and of the flute specifically in Guinea and that our project and students has rekindled their hopes.

L’Ecole Fula Flute and La Compagnie Tyabala are alive and well and thanks to you things will continue to improve for the foreseeable future.

2015 Campaign Update

What is going on with l’École Fula Flute?

The purpose of the current fundraiser is to create working capital so that the Centre Tyabala de Guinea, the organization which is hosting our program (l’École Fula Flute), can have reliable, albeit modest, revenue to hire teachers, get supplies, food and other essential things, to afford them some breating room to allow peace of mind for kids to pursue and deepen their studies. 

Thanks to our generous donors we have so far raised $1500 on our way to hopefully $3000. All the money we will raise will be distributed out on a monthly basis through the coming year. Our goal this time is modest so I encourage everybody to give a little. All U.S. donations are tax-deductible thanks to the support of the Creative Music Foundation.

L’Ecole Fula Flute is a concept and a project in development. The initial idea was to use my invention, the chromatic tambin,* as a culturally appropriate door for Guineans to access music literacy and a world of knowledge. 

As fortune would have it, early on, when I was looking to find a group of students in Guinea to try this idea with, I was steered to an alternative arts-in-education program at the Centre Tyabala de Guinée and their talented and wonderful students. 

During the three week pilot session in 2013, I found that the children were responsive and enthusiastic about learning flute therefore my idea was viable. Then after our successful Kickstarter campaign, I spent the four well-documented months with them there in 2014 and we made great progress both in flute playing and musical literacy. 

The difficulties in pursuing this project are two-fold: funding and living conditions. I had hoped that our story would have generated some notoriety, which in turn, would have helped create financing opportunities but, other than for the significant exception I previously mentioned, that did not occur. Secondly, the four months I spent in Guinea last time were very taxing so I discovered that it is difficult for me to be there for extended periods of time. 

On the positive side, the great Mamady Mansare, God Bless Him, has been teaching our students and they are playing flute fantastically well. So it appears our program has taken some life and is progressing despite the hurdles.

* The chromatic tambin can play the complete chromatic scale as opposed to the diatonic scale produced by the traditional Guinean tambin (a.k.a. Fula flute). For non-musicians, think of the piano keyboard, the seven white keys represent a diatonic scale (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si) whereas the chromatic scale also includes the five black keys (do#, re#, fa#, sol#, la#). Rendering the tambin fully chromatic opens it to myriad scales and musical colors from all over the world.

Quelque chose de très spécial se passe en Guinée et notre projet Kickstarter porte ses fruits. 

L’an dernier, notre film a inspiré une âme généreuse à nous offrir les moyens d’envoyer un professeur à nos élèves permettant ainsi à M.
