Les Enfants de Tyabala
20 oct. 2014When I returned, I had a strange time as I was recovering from typhoid and getting back into the swing of New York. It will take a long time, if ever, to process the inner ramifications of these four months spent in Guinea but they are profound. Also, a ravenous appetite allowed me to gain back most of the pounds I shed over there.
By the time I landed in New York we were all relieved that the ebola situation was under control only to find a few weeks later that it wasn’t. This is very upsetting! Thankfully, for the time being our friends in Conakry are not as heavily affected as others in the region but a life that was already difficult is much harder now. These naturally gregarious people are keeping away from each other for fear of the disease, the government put a moratorium on public gatherings, the opening of the school year has been delayed, businesses are deserting, most foreigners have left, inflation is creeping up, and an apocalyptic haze is hovering about. However, Guineans are strong and used to hardship, they trust in Allah and soldier on.
I hope that our elected officials and the international community will do everything in their power to alleviate this situation, sometimes we need to help just for the sake of helping, what are we rich for? stuffing ourselves full of luxury goods? spending zilliards on weapons that, in the best of cases will end up in an even more expensive scrap yard?
To conclude with some good news, I am happy to announce that I secured the beautiful Judson Memorial Church located in the heart of Greenwich Village, New York to hold, in collaboration with Mulatta Records, an event titled: Les Enfants de Tyabala to celebrate the closing of my Kickstarter Project (itself named “Music Literacy for Guinea”).
On Thursday, November 20, 2014 starting at 7 PM, there will be a CD release / film premiere / flute & photo exhibition / live music / get together. Yep! all that in a tight and light package. Admission will be free and Contributors to the Project will be able to pickup their rewards. You are all cordially invited.
Thank you very much for your continued support and interest.
Sylvain
